How to Research a Location for your Book (without going there).

In the fourth Princess the Cat adventure (working title: Princess the Cat Liberates Paris), I send Princess and Max to the Parisian landmarks we all know: the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, and the Notre Dame Cathedral. I’ve been to all those places before, but I wanted more detail. It wasn’t necessary for the story, but I didn’t want to add an irrelevant detail that would annoy a Parisian.

Thankfully, I was able to watch several videos on youtube to check on specific locations that I don’t remember perfectly.

Like climbing the stairs of the Notre Dame Cathedral.

And I also got some views of the Cathedral via a photography video.

Additionally, I also used Google Maps and got a streetview from the exact position Princess encounters in the book. Again, all the detail wasn’t necessary, but I’m hoping the extra research makes the story feel a little more real.

All of Princess the Cat’s adventures take place in the late 1980s and early nineties, so hopefully the environs of those landmarks haven’t changed significantly since then. Or, at least a nitpicky Parisian doesn’t have such a strong memory!
